New Zealand Forest Stewardship Standard
The FSC New Zealand Forest Stewardship Standard (FSC-STD-NZL-02.1-2023 Plantations) provides the requirements for FSC Forest Management certification in New Zealand. Based on the FSC Principles and Criteria for Forest Stewardship, the Standard adapts the International Generic Indicators to New Zealand's legal, environmental, social and economic context through a chamber-balanced, multi-stakeholder standard development process. It provides a nationally applicable framework for responsible forest management that is consistent with the FSC global framework.

Aotearoa New Zealand's forests are of significant environmental, cultural and economic importance. Today, more than 1.3 million hectares of plantation forest are certified to the FSC Forest Stewardship Standard, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to responsible forest management.
For more than two decades, FSC certification has supported forest managers to implement environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable forest management. FSC's requirements promote the protection of environmental values, respect the rights, values and interests of Māori, and foster meaningful engagement with workers, local communities and other rights holders and stakeholders.

Based on the FSC Principles and Criteria, it adapts the International Generic Indicators to New Zealand's legal, environmental, social, and cultural context, including requirements related to water protection, erosion risk, fair working conditions, and engagement with Māori.
