That idea has taken shape in the form of 100 pest traps, crafted from Abodo's timber offcuts and installed throughout the Kaingaroa Forest Estate. By helping control introduced predators, the traps are protecting native birdlife while giving a manufacturing by-product a valuable second life. “Because of this popular public area, using a safe, chemical-free method is really important. This approach protects local biodiversity while keeping the wetland safe for everyone to enjoy,” said Steve Gatenby, Environmental Specialist at Kaingaroa Tipu.
According to Abodo, the project delivered encouraging early results, with more than 220 pest animals captured in the first month of the programme. The initiative showcases how collaboration between FSC-certified organisations can deliver tangible environmental outcomes while supporting healthy, resilient forest ecosystems.
