Forest Management Certification in Australia and New Zealand
FSC's Principles and Criteria set out the global requirements for responsible forest management. Chamber-balanced standard development groups (SDG) adapt the International Generic Indicators at the regional or national level to reflect the diverse legal, social and geographical conditions of forests in different parts of the world. The resulting adjustment is incorporated into a National Forest Stewardship Standard.
In Australia and New Zealand, FSC Forest Management certification is conducted against the respective National Forest Stewardship Standards (FSC-STD-AUS-01-2018 and FSC-STD-NZL-02.1-2023), which adapt the International Generic Indicators to national legislative, environmental, social and economic conditions while remaining fully aligned with globally consistent FSC Principles and Criteria for responsible forest management.
Group Schemes
FSC certificate holders can join together to form a group certification scheme and share their efforts for forest management planning, harvesting, monitoring and marketing their products. Group certification makes it easier, particularly for smallholders, to become FSC-certified, as it enables group members to share costs and workload in applying for and maintaining an FSC certificate.
Small or Low Intensity Managed Forests (SLIMF)
SLIMF owners/managers benefit from streamlined certification procedures affecting both the initial certification assessment and annual monitoring. This reduced intensity of auditing should lead to lower costs.
In addition, SLIMF owners/managers may not require the same level of documentation or management systems as managers of larger or more intensively managed woodland areas.
