Alistair Monument, FSC Asia-Pacific Director, spoke to those present at the 2012 FSC Australia AGM about the importance of the FSC system in changing poor forestry practices in South East and East Asia. Alistair highlighted the significant work FSC is doing in the region, particularly in China, to inform consumers and business about the FSC system. In China alone, FSC Chain of Custody certificates now number almost 2,500 – in 2007 there were less than 500. With rapid regional growth and wealth generation Asian markets have access to both emergent domestic demand for FSC certified products, as well as greater access to international FSC markets.

Importantly, the environmental and social benefits for the region and those in the region of a shift to FSC are clear. As Alistair pointed out, FSC forest certification increases biodiversity and reduces carbon emissions. FSC certified forests have almost 50 tonnes greater biomass per hectare than conventional logging forests. Increased biodiversity and recognised high conservation values mean that threats to local flora and fauna are greatly reduced.

At a social level, the FSC system, through Small and Lower Intensity Managed Forests (SLIMF) and other smallholder programs allow local rural communities (including indigenous communities) in the region access to the benefits of FSC certification. Through a dedication to community and human rights, strict health and safety guidelines and significant development potential, the FSC system offers a lot to a broad range of social groups through the Asia-Pacific regions.

Alistair’s speech was important as it gave an international perspective to forestry issues. FSC’s incredible growth in the Asia-Pacific offers new linkages between national FSC communities, and huge prospects for both import and export trade in Australia. If you’re thinking of becoming involved in FSC, there has never been a better time than right now. Get certified today and be a part of the solution.
