Hugh Barr passed away in the December of 2021. A man who had made a habit of beating the odds and coming out on top, Hugh is and always will be a life member of the Tararua Tramping Club. Having played a key role in the development of many of New Zealand’s most notable walking tracks, it was always a treat to hear Hugh talk about the Aroha Trail, how he would negotiate with farmers, foresters, and private landowners to connect tracks that had never been connected before.

Hugh played a significant role in the development of our National Standards, including the standard currently in development. Representing the Council of Outdoor Recreation Associations, he would provide wisdom, insight and knowledge that was invaluable in bringing safe forest access to the people of New Zealand. Many aspects of the New Zealand FSC standards have relied on his inputs and for this we show our gratitude.

Hugh was tirelessly dedicated to building harmony between the people of Aotearoa and it’s beautiful landscapes. His efforts will always be remembered, and his ethos is one to admire and aspire to.
