This month our very own Craig Kenney caught up with the good people at Wellington Zoo to chat about animal conservation. He discovered there are many things all of us can do to support animal conservation, and the Wellington Zoo is leading the charge.
Among the many animals being protected are Chimps, whose habitat has been carefully constructed with FSC certified materials.“Regarding our chimp project, FSC timber sourcing was specifically dictated in the Zoo’s construction specification when tendered and also when putting together the design with the design consultants. We had successfully used FSC certified Purple Heart elsewhere in the Zoo through previous projects and are really happy with its performance and aesthetics” said Chris Jerram, the General Manager of Safety, Assets & Sustainability at Wellington Zoo said to Mr Kenney.
The Wellington Zoo has been highlighting the benefits of FSC certification to all its visitors. Mr Kenney found that all all of this action and work dates back to 2018 conference of the World Zoo and Aquariums Association (WAZA), when FSC signed an MOU with WAZA to encourage members to make concerted efforts to choose FSC certified products. The direct benefits of this conservation work has led to greater numbers of chimps being protected both within the Wellington Zoo and in the wild.
